Philippa Egbumokei Inspires Readers with Historical Insight at LRF Book Reading
The Literary Renaissance Foundation (LRF) hosted an enlightening virtual book reading session featuring Mrs. Philippa Egbumokei, a seasoned educator and author of Milestones to Success. With over two decades of teaching experience, she currently serves as the Head of the Social Science Department at the Lagoon School, Lagos, and is a Microsoft Certified Educator. Her book, written for junior secondary students, focuses on rekindling interest in history education—a subject she described as the “bedrock of national understanding and future prediction.”
During the session, Mrs. Egbumokei explained that Milestones to Success is a carefully structured collection of history past questions designed in line with the Nigerian curriculum. She emphasised the importance of historical knowledge in shaping critical thinking, citizenship, and moral awareness. According to her, “History is the study of the past relating to the present to predict the future.”
She further highlighted that history equips students with the ability to analyse evidence, understand origins, and avoid repeating past mistakes. The author also discussed different sources of history—primary, secondary, and tertiary, linking them to modern realities such as social media and online archives.
Participants commended Mrs. Egbumokei’s presentation for its clarity, depth, and relevance, especially as it coincided with Nigeria’s Independence period. Many described the discussion as a powerful reminder of the nation’s cultural heritage, pre-colonial civilizations, and indigenous systems of governance.
Questions from participants explored the role of digital tools such as Google in preserving history, the current state of history within Nigeria’s curriculum, and how historical lessons can help address present national challenges such as ethnic division and insecurity.
The session concluded with expressions of appreciation from the LRF organisers, who applauded Mrs. Egbumokei’s contribution to reviving history education and inspiring civic consciousness among learners. Participants were encouraged to join the LRF online forum to access the author’s book and continue engaging in literary discussions.
The Foundation also announced its upcoming Reading Culture Dialogue, which will focus on “Enforcing Standards and Academic Integrity in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.”
