The LRF Team Visits Christview Leadersland Int’l School

On Oct 9, 2019, the Literary Renaissance Foundation team paid a visit to Christview Leadersland International School, Lekki Lagos. The programme commenced at 11:00 am with the introduction of the Literary Renaissance Foundation team to the Staff and Leaders as the students refer to themselves.

Shortly after the introduction was the talk with the pupils by the Foundation’s Project Coordinator, Hannah Abe. The main idea of the visit was to sensitise the pupils about cultivating a reading culture.

She highlighted the objectives of the Foundation, which is to revive reading culture in Nigeria one person per time. She then spoke about how to cultivate a reading habit, emphasising that the zeal students applied while acquiring skill in playing musical instruments, learning how to swim, shooting free throws at basketball, should also be applied to reading in order to be a better leader in any choice of career.

She explained to the students how to cultivate a good reading habit, stressing the following points.

• Set a time for reading
• Always carry a book
• Find a quiet place
• Reduce time spent on television/internet
• Keep a log
• Get used books if you can’t afford a new book
• Have a library day
• Read fun and compelling books
• Make it pleasurable
• Set high goals
• Have a reading hour or reading day.

She also educated them on the importance of cultivating a reading habit at their formative stage citing Dr. Ben Carson as an example whose turnaround from a mediocre to a successful person can be traced to conscious effort to read. And today he is one of the best neurosurgeons in the world, with the landmark feat of being the first surgeon to separate a Siamese twin. A video clip was also shown to the students.

Hannah also mentioned names of people such as Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Mark Zuckerberg, Oprah Winfrey, who are successful in their chosen career because they cultivating a reading habit.

The pupils were encouraged to cultivate a good reading habit with an endnote that they need to read more to become a success now and the future.

The programme came to an end at 12:10pm after a question and answer session and a singing session with the pupils.

There would be a reading and spelling competition by November 2019 when the pupil must have read the recommended books.
