The LRF representatives in Ibadan paid a brief visit to Abadina Grammar School, University of Ibadan, Nigeria, to educate the students on the importance of reading. Representing the Literary Renaissance Foundation were:

  1. Mrs Olabisi Olasupo
  2. Funmilayo Makinde

Mrs Olasupo explained to the students the meaning of Literary Renaissance Foundation. She stated that literary involves the ability to read and write, while renaissance means bringing back to life something that is no longer in vogue.

Mrs Olasupo also noted that the events that trend today are music videos, parties and gangsterism, which is why the nation’s priorities are misplaced and our values are lost. She added that the difference between the generation of Nnamdi Azikwe and Obafemi Awolowo, and today’s generation is the disparity in our values.

“In the past generation, the individuals there put much value into reading,’ she said, “but today we have so many distractions. Social media has distracted us which is why we have leaders today who have no plan for us.”

She further emphasized that it is until we set things right and begin to value people who can move our society forward that we can have a leeway to our social problems in Nigeria. As a result of this, the LRF has taken the initiative to sensitize students and awaken the love for reading because the students today are tomorrow’s leaders.

Then, Olabisi called on some of the students to read the benefits of reading on the placard displayed. Gifts were given both to those who read and others who answered questions. 12 pens were given in total.

Due to time constraints, the students were unable to read the books on the assembly ground. No book was gifted to the students. The visit came to an end at 8:20am.
